Pilates is an exercise system developed in the 1920s by legendary physical trainer Joseph H. Pilates. It is a series of controlled movements that engage the body AND mind. Pilates is performed on specially designed apparatuses and is taught by extensively trained individuals.
Pilates is not just a fitness class, it is whole body conditioning. As a result, it improves flexibility and strength simultaneously without building bulk. With an emphasis on core strength, Classical Pilates teaches you how to initiate all movement from your core instead of fatiguing secondary muscles to the point of compensation and injury. It also helps your balance, control, and mental focus. On the positive side, whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just looking to incorporate some healthy movement into your life, Pilates is for anyone, at any age. And for the seasoned athletes and gym rats, we’re not looking to replace your current workout regiment, but to enhance it. Pilates supports what you’ve worked so hard to build.
At Inertia6 we teach Classical Pilates, which means we maintain the quality and integrity of Joe’s original studio. When Joseph H. Pilates developed his method of exercise, he did not trademark the name “Pilates.” As a result, there is a wide range of styles all legally called “Pilates,” despite them not following or understanding the original method. Though they are more rare, there are still Classical Pilates studios all around the world that uphold the quality and devotion to the method as Joe once did. Inertia6 is proud to be one of these studios. Read more about the 6 Principals of Pilates on our blog.
