Group Classes Versus Privates

One question Pilates instructors frequently get asked is, “should I do group classes, or privates?” It seems like a simple question when it’s really a bit more complicated. It depends on several factors like your goals, how quickly do you want to progress, how good your mind-body connection is, and if you focus better or worse in a group setting. A good Pilates instructor will be able to answer these questions and help you decide what’s best for you and your practice.

Private Sessions

Every new client should begin with a series of privates. In the beginning, Pilates is complicated. The movements are difficult than the equipment is dangerous if not used correctly. Private sessions will help you develop your mind-body connection, get comfortable with the exercises, and learn how to use the equipment safely. It’s much easier for your instructor to address your unique needs and goals in a one-one-one session. Even advanced clients benefit greatly from private sessions. They may use their sessions to improve their precision and flow, learn new exercises, or work on a specific issue or injury.

Group Classes

Many people enjoy the benefits of taking group classes. Group pricing is certainly more economical. Additionally, group classes add a different kind of energy to your Pilates practice. You may enjoy some light competition. You may like the feeling of having partners working alongside you. Your partners can motivate you and hold you accountable for reaching your goals. Group classes tend to work the best when every member of the group has roughly the same fitness level and similar goals.

There are benefits to taking both privates sessions and group classes. If you can’t decide which you like best, you can always do both! Combining privates with group classes and mix things up and give you focus.
